Top 5 Best Mental Golf Apps for Lower Scores Fast

The mental game is everything in golf. Golf is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one, and your ability to manage your mind on the course can make all the difference.

Staying focused, managing stress, and maintaining a positive mindset are key to improving your performance. Fortunately, with the rise of mental golf apps, golfers now have the tools to enhance their mental game right at their fingertips. In this blog, I’ll share the best mental golf apps that can help you master your mind and lower your scores on the course.

Best Mental Golf Apps

While mental golf books can help your mindset, apps can sometimes take it a step further. I’ve tried just about every mental game program out there to help my students and also my game. Here are the ones you should consider so you can play wicked smart golf.

1. Mental Golf Type (MGT)

Did you know that some mental golf tips can actually hurt your game? That’s right, not all mental tips are created equal - that’s where Mental Golf Type comes in.

Think of Mental Golf Type as a custom fitting for your mindset. If you’re like most golfers you get fit for clubs, you should do the same for your mental game.

Mental Golf Type is a unique system that was created by John Weir (a four time guest on Wicked Smart Golf podcast) that provides tips based on your unique personality type. This way you can make sure the advice is catered to your game and will help, not hurt, your performance.

Benefits

  • Personality-Based Training: Mental Golf Type tailors its mental game strategies based on your personality type, just like a fitter adjusts equipment for your clubs.
  • Custom Mental Game Plans: Receive personalized mental game plans that suit your unique style, no cookie cutter advice.
  • In-Depth Assessments: Conduct assessments to understand your mental strengths and weaknesses.

Mental Golf Type is unique in its approach, focusing on personality types to provide customized mental training. This app is perfect for golfers who want a tailored approach to their mental game based on their inherent traits.

2. DECADE Golf

Course management is an underrated part of golf and I think of it as an extension of the mental game. When you make the right decisions - in terms of club selection, approach shot targets, etc. - you make it a lot easier to score.

But how do you know when to aim for the flag? When to hit the driver vs. 3-wood? When to layup vs. go for the green?

This is where DECADE Golf comes in. Not only does it make it easy to learn how to make better decisions, it’s packed with tons of mindset lessons as well.

Benefits

  • Course Management System: DECADE Golf offers a comprehensive course management strategy based on statistical analysis, so you can pick clubs and targets with confidence.
  • Mental Game Insights: Learn more about meditation, pre-shot routines, and other ways to think like a PGA Tour player so you can score lower.
  • Decision-Making Tools: Tools and strategies to help you make smarter decisions during your rounds, so make the "wicked smart" choice.

DECADE Golf is fantastic for golfers looking to improve their strategic thinking and course management. By combining mental game insights with practical decision-making tools, this app helps golfers play smarter, not harder. Plus, there are tons of practice tips too and the app has tons of features.

3. Imagine Golf

Another mental game app I like is Imagine Golf, which has a ton of content to inspire better golf. It’s different from Mental Golf Type or DECADE, as it focuses on story telling, book reviews, quick tips, and audio tracks.

Benefits

  • Daily Tips and Drills: Imagine Golf provides short, daily audio lessons from PGA professionals and sports psychologists to keep you mentally sharp.
  • Visualizations and Mental Exercises: The app includes guided visualizations to help you prepare mentally for your rounds.
  • Community and Challenges: Engage with a community of golfers and participate in challenges to keep your practice fun and competitive.

Imagine Golf is ideal for golfers who want consistent, bite-sized mental training. The daily tips are perfect for integrating mental practice into your routine without overwhelming you with too much information at once.

4. Mind Caddie

Does your mind need a caddie to play better every single round? If so, you can learn tons of tools for the mental game with the Mind Caddie app. The coach is Karl Morris, who has worked with top players and is the host of the Brain Booster podcast.

As mentioned on their website, “Our app provides audio and video lessons and programs to help you understand how the mind works on the course but more importantly, how to control it.

Whether you are looking for more consistency, better concentration or to stop compounding one bad shot with another, Mind Caddie offers personalized content for all of this.”

These tips and tricks are used by six major champions, PGA/LPGA players, and two Ryder Cup captains.

Benefits

  • Personalized Mental Coaching: Mind Caddie provides personalized mental coaching tips and exercises.
  • Focus and Relaxation Techniques: Get access to a variety of techniques to help you focus and relax before and during your rounds.
  • Mental Challenges: Participate in mental challenges designed to improve your mental toughness.

Mind Caddie is excellent for golfers who want personalized mental coaching. The focus and relaxation techniques are particularly useful for managing stress and staying calm under pressure.

TBD: Golf Guru

Ready to become your own “mental game guru” so you can have the tools to find peace on the course? If so, you’ll love the Golf Guru app (Dec. 2024 update - this app looks to be discontinued).

As mentioned on their website, “Unlock the power of your mind and revolutionize your performance on the course. With Golf Guru by your side, you'll conquer the mental challenges that have been holding you back, and experience a whole new level of golf. Shoot lower scores, deal with pressure on the course, and ultimately enjoy your game more.”

Benefits

  • Interactive Mental Training: This mental game app offers interactive mental training sessions and drills to train your mindset.
  • Progress Tracking: Track your progress and see how your mental game improves over time.
  • Expert Guidance: Learn from top mental coaches and sports psychologists, including Dr. Joseph Parent, who was a 2X guest on the podcast.

Golf Guru stands out for its interactive and engaging mental training sessions. The ability to track progress makes it easy for golfers to see improvements and stay motivated. Plus, there is a 7-day free trial as well.

Other Apps to Improve Your Mental Golf Game

The five mental golf apps above can no doubt have a huge role in improving your mindset to help you make better decisions on the course. However, there are a few other apps that aren’t specific to golf that can also help your attitude on the course.

  • Headspace: This app offers a wide range of meditation and mindfulness exercises for beginners to advanced levels. Make this part of your morning practice to give you a mental edge and start the day like a champion.
  • Primed Mind: This app offers some amazing self-hypnosis tracks to take your mental game (on and off the course) to the next level by tapping into your subconscious. Think of this app like a “nap with a purpose” as you can reprogram yourself over time.
  • Calm: This app can help you manage stress and improve overall mental well-being. Plus, it can help get you to sleep faster, which can improve your mental and physical health.
  • Neuropeak Pro: While not technically a "mental game app", Neuropeak Pro and the NTEL Belt is a game-changer for your mindset. This app makes it easy to learn how to breathe properly (most of us breathe too shallow) so you can get out of stress and play better golf.

Closing Thoughts

Choosing the best mental golf app depends on your individual needs and preferences. After using the Mental Golf Type system since 2022 I still think it’s the best system in golf. When you learn how to stay out of stress based on your personality type, you’ll play better (and have more fun).

  • If you prefer daily, bite-sized lessons, Imagine Golf is a great choice.
  • If you want to improve course management and get some mindset help, DECADE Golf is ideal.
  • Mind Caddie focuses on personalized coaching, and other non-golf apps are perfect for golfers wanting to incorporate mindfulness and meditation.

Each of these apps offers unique features to help you enhance your mental game, so explore them and find the one that fits your needs best. Improving your mental approach to golf can lead to lower scores and a more enjoyable experience on the course.
