ButterBlade Review - The Best Swing Trainer in Golf?
The ButterBlade swing trainer was created by Dr. Luke Benoit of RYP Golf to help golfers improve accuracy and master ballstriking. I'm a huge fan of their speed trainer Rypstick as it's helped me increase clubhead speeds to 112 mph (sometimes up to 117 mph).
I've also found that Rypstick can help your tempo, release, and add clubhead speed. But what can the ButterBlade help with?
Improving your irons so you can hit more greens in regulation and have more consistency in your game. Just like longer drives leads to lower handicaps, the same is true with hitting more greens in regulation.
Why The ButterBlade Works
Before getting into the benefits of ButterBlade, let's start with one of a kind design. First off, it's tiny... barely bigger than a golf ball as seen in the images.
The ButterBlade is a very small 7-iron that is a fraction of the size of a normal mid-iron. This is intentional to help you gain awareness of your impact location.
In a world where everyone is trying to buy more forgiving clubs, this training aid is the exact opposite. As soon as I took it out of the box, it reminded me of an old school blade. Part of me was terrified, but I quickly realized that if I can hit this club well, a normal iron will be wicked easy.
Here is why the small design is so effective according to RYP Golf.
“This amplified feedback forces you to focus on hitting the ball cleanly. The more you practice, the better your body becomes at consistently finding that perfect spot on the clubface.
Soon, hitting the sweet spot becomes second nature. This translates to more accurate shots and a lower score, even when you return to your regular clubs.”
After testing it for months, I couldn’t agree more. Once you get over the intimidation of the small design, it will teach you to improve your swing for a lot more consistency.
Since the face is so small, you immediately can tell if you hit it perfect, okay, or horrible. But that enhanced feedback is what makes it so easy to learn from your mistakes and make adjustments.
As noted on their website, “Enhanced feel empowers you to identify the causes of mishits (toe or heel?) and make adjustments on the fly. Expect quantifiable changes like tighter dispersion, fewer mishits, and consistently better scores.”
How to Use ButterBlade
The first time using the ButterBlade you’ll want to get warmed up with stretching and wedges like normal.
Once you’ve loosened up, hit about 20–25 balls with the new club to get a feel for it. It'll feel very small and unforgiving - but that’s the point. It’s training to easily identify your mishit and make adjustments to improve your strike.
After you get a feel for it, go back to your normal 7-iron and watch how easy it is to hit. During my block practice sessions I like to warm up with wedges, then hit the ButterBlade for five shots, then my normal 7-iron for five shots. It’s astonishing how much it’s helped me improve my tempo and make solid contact.
Additionally, Dr. Luke Benoit also recommends trying it out with a can of athletes foot spray. Start by spraying the face of the club, then hit some balls and note where you made contact.
If you’re missing on the toe or heel, make adjustments so you can hit it better. Follow Dr. Luke's tips in the video so you can start improving your strike and finding the sweet spot a lot more often.
Now that you know how to use the ButterBlade, here is why this training aid is wicked smart approved.
Easy to Use
One thing I always look for when using training aids is that it's easy to use. The easier it is to get started, the more likely you are to use it and get results.
Simply take it out of the box and start hitting golf balls. You can use it indoors with real golf balls or the patented foam balls from RYP Golf. Or, take it to the driving range and use it like a normal 7-iron.
This club is always in my car, so I can use it in regular sessions at the simulator or range. Because I know if I can hit it well, hitting my normal mid to long irons is easy!
Works With Popular Iron Drills
Dr. Luke Benoit has also helped my swing in 2024 after developing some bad habits. After improving my grip and backswing, the next issue we wanted to tackle was early extension.
I've been doing a variety of drills to stay down and not stand up on my swing. What’s great is that I’ll go through my drills using the ButterBlade instead of a normal iron. This makes it even more effective as I try to improve my swing and hit the sweet spot.
I love that it's so practical and convenient to use. Whether you're doing drills, skills practice, or just working on the fundamentals.
Multiple Sizes for All Types of Golfers
Another perk with this unique training aid is the fact it’s offered in several shaft options and sizes. The ButterBlade is available in right or left-hand models, for men, senior, junior, and ladies.
The men’s version is also available in three shaft options; regular, stiff, x-stiff. I was very impressed they have multiple shafts, as most swing trainers are one size fits all. Make sure to order the same one that matches the rest of your iron set for a smooth transition from ButterBlade to hitting your irons.
Pairs Well With Rypstick
ButterBlade is part of the RYP (Reach Your Potential brand) which is responsible for the best speed trainer in golf - Rypstick. After testing the big three out - Rypstick, The Stack System, and SuperSpeed Golf - I think Rypstick is the best.
In the offseason, I recommend all my mental golf coaching students to use Rypstick to maintain and even add speed. Learn more about the best speed trainers now.
Similar Training Aids
ButterBlade really is one of one when it comes to swing trainers and I don't think there is a direct competitor like there is with speed trainers. However, there are a few similarities between it and these two swing trainers.
Momentus Swing Trainer
If you’ve been playing golf for a while, chances are you remember the Momentus Swing Trainer. This is the “OG” of swing trainers and has a similar design to the ButterBlade thanks to the yellow shaft.
The Momentus is a weighted swing trainer that effectively “swings the club for you. Swing the club forward for about 18 inches to get some momentum and let it set at the top of your swing. It should help you have a good swing plane a
One advantage it does have over the ButterBlade is the built-in grip trainer. This ensures your hands are in the right spot all the time

Lag Shot Swing Trainer
Another swing trainer is the Lag Shot 7-iron (it’s also available as a wedge or driver too). The 7-iron is the original design from Lag Shot and has an ultra whippy shaft to help you improve your lag.
Like the ButterBlade, this club helps groove a more consistent swing and provides immediate feedback. It doesn't provide quite as many benefits as the ButterBlade, but might help beginners with tempo and creating lag.
